This is one of my most favorite places on Mallorca – some may understand my excitement, some won’t, but to me this is the prettiest climb on the island.
Located in the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana in the North-West of the island, Coll dels Reis is better known as “The Sa Calobra Climb” – and a very well known spot among cyclists. A beautiful mountain road leading through the mountains featuring 26 switchbacks. Whereas usually you have to climb a mountain before you can descent it at Coll dels Reis you arrive at the top of the climb; meaning that you first have to descent to the port of Sa Calobra to be able to climb it.
In my opinion this is one of the most fun climbs of all time. With 9.4km it seems long but the average gradient of 7% makes it an absolutely enjoyable experience. Forget your bike computer and enjoy the views!
To reach Tramauntata, there are different options that make it possible to find a way for every ability and fitness level. Sa Calobra is accessible from any point of the Island, either starting in Palma City, Palma Bay, West or East side of Mallorca – and you can always adapt the distance you want to ride. For some ideas: to get closer to Sa Calobra without already riding for hours you can take the train to Inca or Sa Pobla. The train leaves every 10 minutes from Palma Center and you can take your bike for free (the train ticket is less than 3Euros!). Another (even more scenic) option is to take the boat at the bottom of Sa Calobra to Puerto de Soller and finish the route in an easier way without climbing Coll dels Reis. P.s. Little tipp: don’t allow yourself too much cake down at Sa Calobra or the climb back will become harder than expected. ;-)
